Hi, Simi, Where'smycoat is right! Losing five pounds per week is unrealistic at your weight. It would be better to aim for two pounds per week and take a bit longer to get to your goal. You'll be much more likely to keep it off that way. The only way to lose weight more rapidly would be to increase your exercise tremendously. Let's say your body needs 2000 calories on a low-carb diet. On a low-carb diet, your body burns more calories than if you were on a low-fat, low-calorie diet. Read Dr. Atkins's book to learn why. What if you kept to a very restrictive 1000 calories on your low-carb diet? That's a 1000 calorie deficit each day, multiplied by seven. A pound of fat is 3500 calories, so you would lose two pounds per week. If you add an hour of running per day (10 miles), that would be about 700 calories more you would burn each day. So that's an extra pound and a quarter you'd lose each week, totaling 3.25 pounds. But it's hard to run ten miles per day, and 1000 calories is very low. On the other hand, say you eat a reasonable diet of 1200 calories and just take an easy run of 30 minutes per day (3 miles). You have a calorie deficit of 800 calories per day for food, and 350 for exercise. You'll lose 2.3 pounds. You'll also feel good. It's kind of like the person who goes 80 mph on the freeway and makes it to the office three minutes ahead of the person who follows the speed limit. All in all, is it worth it to risk your life?
