I would think it's a branch of the science of "memetics" - but I'm not certain.

Thanks. It does seem similar to a meme. But I think this is a little bit different...it's not just an idea spreading virally for whatever reason. I think it has more to do with self interest, positive vs negative rights, or maybe spite. I don't think any of those are quite it though.
