Interesting. From beginning to end France stood firm.
There may have been others, but France was the largest and most obvious example.

Poland disappeared for awhile, but came back. The polish people kept their culture alive during that time, even though they didn't even have a country. That says a lot. Proud, but very generous and giving folks.
