I haven't read the book; but an willing to bet JFK was talking about N. European immigrants when "celebrating the immigrant experience in America". If alive today, he would probably deplore what the country has become.

Yes, to be fair I have not read it either. Somehow though, like yourself, I don't think he was talking about letting every Muhammed, Jose, and Kunta Kinte in for a free ride at the expence and degredation of the working populous.
