You are probably dealing with the same thing I did with my girl Gabby. You didn't have closure.
I did exactly the same thing for nearly 4 years. It was constant. Because Gabby had her vocal chords punched early in her life, she had a bark, but it was very distinctive. I heard it constantly when I was outside.

Once I found out that she had not in fact died after being stolen, but had been found by a rescue and adopted to an awesome home, it suddenly stopped. I have closure. I know where she is and that it is best for her at this point in both our lives.

I wish you well, and do know who it feels. I hope that one day you will be able to come to terms with it so that your mind does not continue to do this to you.
