Sooo...if I was planning on buying a puppy to start getting into showing (starting in "fun" shows of course) I should be more concerned with one that is UKC registered as opposed to AKC?? I know this sounds like a totally ignorant question but how in the heck do i tell the difference between the Ambully, American Staffordshire Terrier, the staffordshire bull terrier & APBT?!? They all look the same...and this particular breeder that I was looking at just calls them "pit bulls" so i assume that they are APBT?!?
That would depend on what registry you want to show with. If you want to do AKC, then you need to look for an AmStaff. Many AmStaff's are still dual registered with UKC, so you could show both registries if you wanted (I do). If you get a UKC registered dog, and only that, you'd only be able to show UKC. Most APBT's that show conformation in UKC are very AmStaff looking.. they aren't the ADBA type dog.

The AmBully & SBT are completely different and you should easily be able to tell what is what once you do more research

This is a good read on the different "types": Visual comparison of top winning UKC, AKC and ADBA dogs

If the breeder is just calling them "Pit Bulls", I'd probably steer clear.
