I'd say just go to shows. ADBA, UKC, AKC, ABDA...all of em that you can reasonably drive to. Check out dogs, talk to people and decide which breed you want. You'll learn a lot, meet a lot of dogs and hopefully become able to tell them all apart more easily. Then you will have contacts and be able to select a reputable and responsible breeder to get your pup from.
