Well, I won't say I've never smacked my dogs, that'd be a lie. I don't do it to "show them whose boss" though. If one of my dogs is deliberately disobeying me or just plain being a brat, then yeah, they'll get a whack on the butt. Generally speaking though, a firm "knock it off!" is enough for them. And FWIW, none of my dogs are hand shy.
