Bentley was super squeamish and hand shy when I got him. The first 6 months I had him, if you made any sudden movements around him, he'd drop to the ground and pee.. That was really annoying, but it was something we had to work through. I've smacked him on the ass a couple times when he decides he's not going to listen (like Kady05 and MJJean) but I've never full on beat him. He's still hand shy a bit. He'll book it to his cage or out of the room if he thinks you're going to smack him. But mostly, I can get my point across by speaking in a low growl toward him.

Carter, the Dogo, is the extremely submissive, pees when anything happens dog. You can't even walk up to him without him peeing. And this is me, I live with him and I have to watch him carefully when I walk up to him to avoid accidents. If he's overly excited, he pees. If he's nervous, he pees. He's got the bladder of a small excitable dog but I know of 1 specific incident that I smacked him. Usually calling his "BAD" is good enough for him because generally so submissive anyway. Not the 1 time around Xmas, he was chewing on a new Kong. He had been doing his thing on the other end of the room. I went over to check and make sure he was doing okay. Apparently made the epic mistake (in his eyes) of touching it and he growled at me. I don't know if he snapped at me because I had smacked him and taken it before I had a chance to think much of what was going on. That's the only time I've hit him because I know he's very sensitive.
