When I decided to get a Saint Bernard, I first invested in a Dyson vacuum. It solves pretty much all my problems, except for the dog smell. Plus, I love using it to vacuum up spiders. I've treated it like a shop vac, and it still works like it did on the day I got it.

For dog smell in carpet, I liberally sprinkle baking soda over the carpet, let it sit for about 20-30 minutes, then vacuum throughly.
