Having dogs was the main reason I bought a house (aside from all the problems I've had with every land lord I've rented from, god I hate land lords). At least 1 in 5 people in the neighborhood have a pit bull (or a Rottie or GSD). What I paid in rent last year is pretty much what I paid for my house (the house was a few grand more, but totally worth it).

Pretty much all the apartments around here don't allow "aggressive" breeds. Well, at least the nice ones. The ones that do allow pits are run down and very ghetto, and I wouldn't live there if you paid me to.
