Almost four years ago, my Champion smooth collie Gabby was stolen from my back yard.
This is why I now have my Rottie, Harley. I still have one retired Champion, Conner who just turned 15.
Even to this day I still make occasional walks through the local shelter just in case.
About 3 years ago we were walking through the shelter and saw this young white Am. Staff sitting in one of the kennels. He was 9 months old and had been there for over 3 months.
My BF and I both thought he was the most striking fellow we had ever seen, and just had to ask to take him out in the exercise yard and play with him. There was an instant connection between him and my BF. This puppy would not leave his side, other than to retrieve a toy that we threw and come immediately back.
In talking to a shelter worker, we found out that if they did not find a home for this dog soon, (They called him Ross) they were going to euthanize him. Well that just wasn't going to happen. Being an Am Staff he was considered a "Special" adoption and it was supposed to take several days to complete. But, because of my years of training and knowing exactly what to tell them, we were able to get him that day.
Within a few days his name was changed to Jake. A few months later BF and Jake moved in with me and my two dogs. We knew from the beginning to be aware of possible DA and although he is a bossy little cuss, over all we have a great family of K9s here. Jake has turned out to be a very good ambassador for his breed and has been very instrumental in educating a lot of people about the breed.
We do not set our dogs up for failure and they are only together when properly supervised. Jake sleeps in our bedroom at night, while Harley's job is to watch the rest of the house. The old man stretches out on the sofa.
As I have said before, Jake is the first Am Staff that I have actually lived with, but I'm hooked. I've never had a dog that I had to be aware of DA before, but it's worth it. Everything else about him is more than I could ask for.
