I guess it depends on your strengths then? I've made birdies and pars doing both ways, as well as bogeys or worse doing both ways. For me personally, if the green is pretty open, the closer I get the better chance of getting on there with a closer putt at birdie than 100 yards out at the same green. If the green is surrounded by water or a close hazard, assess the risk and go from there. Most situations it's a layup.
