My golf coach told me I should have the same pre-shot routine on all my putts and I have to say it is making a huge difference in my putting.
Ball should have line drawn on it
Get behind ball and place line in direction of the line of my putt
Address ball and take one or two practice strokes while looking at hole to get a feel for the putt (don't change line of putt from this angle-you won't see it the same as you will behind the ball)
Square putter to line on ball (this is why I love my SeeMore putter--I know when it is square when my red dot disappears)
Then putt using stroke you just practiced
When I use my driver and irons, I always get behind my ball and pick a spot about 1-5' in front of it and use that to align my shots. I usually do not take a practice shot although I probably should.
