I have a membership at a local 9 hole course that doesn't have fairway irrigation and the conditions as can be expected, get pretty bad my late August in CT. They water the greens and tees frequently, but everything else is just terrible. It is very inexpensive (less than $400/year for me and my sons) and it gives them a place they can learn the game and get some experience before going to a tougher course.

Surprisingly, it has helped my game. the bad lies and small hard greens have made me a better player as when I play courses with such amenities as grass and big, soft fast greens, I generally play great on them.
