Your friend is an idiot, to be blunt...., it is quite possible to break 80 for anyone else pending they hit the rest of the sticks well...including the putter.
I echo the above statement from hart... It is completely possible. I played with an elderly gentleman, if I'd guess he was in his late 70s early 80s. He hit his driver maybe 200 yards and shot a 78. When he hit his clubs they were dead straight and exactly where he wanted them. I don't remember him missing a fairway the entire round. Not only were his irons dead on but his short game was the best of anyone I've ever played with. He never 3 putted and if he didn't make hit first putt he definitely left a tap in for a two. He was a joy to play with and an inspiration. Btw, he played the same tees as me at the time, we played from the whites (I don't remember the yardage)
