So what did your dad say to the man in response? Seems weird that a guy would start in on you with your father standing there.

My first thought as well. The world is full of assclowns and a good number of them happen to play golf. Just go about your business on the range and on the course and don't let the "stuffed shirt" oldtimers get the best of you. In my observation, it is the adults that show the least amount of care for the course or respect those around them. My course is full of Jr's and that makes most of the members happy. There are lots of worse things a kid could be doing and golf is not one of them.
