In my opinion it's all about who you are playing with. If I get paired up with someone I do not know, etiquette is priority #1. If its my weekly Sunday or Wednesday group, then volume Freddie said, banter during the round is common, all while still observing proper etiquette in regards to others game.

If your playing with buddies, the banter is one if the best parts of the game, especially if you can get in the head of the person you ate playing.

While etiquette is important. There is nothing worse than playing golf with someone who is way too serious about everything.
