I've left groups I've been paired with as a single, many times, for a variety of reasons - slow play, lack of golf etiquette, and even excessive drinking. I figure they're strangers and they certainly didn't care if I left the group - they might even have been glad to see me leave!

One of the courses I used to play had the second green right near the parking lot. Many a time I'd get done with the second hole and tell the group "oh, I see my regular playing partner just pulled in, hope you don't mind that I leave and join him on #1." Very convenient.
