I use GHIN. It takes my 10 best rounds out of my last 20 played and averages out. It then considers the slope rating and course rating to create a handicap index. The handicap index allows you to go to various courses of various difficulties, and have a varying handicap based on that difficulty.

At the current moment, I am a 6.2 index, and on my course playing from the 'gold' tees, that is a handicap of 7.

Here is an example of an Index card GHIN offers... It's not my most updated, but it should give you a good idea...

As you can see, the 10 best rounds are starred,
