I travel quite a bit, and I find that your third option works well for me. I do have a home course that I play quite a few times during the year, but it is a muni course, so there are not any extra monies involved other than practice balls, and/or green fees. I tried the membership stuff a few years ago, and found I did not play any different, than I do at the muni. Plus I saved a ton of money to spend on other things more worth while.
