If you are stubbing the club into the ground before or after you make contact then you are not chipping correctly. A short chip off the green should not do any serious damage.
I agree - but how many golfers that you see on the course would you trust to do it correctly? Hell, note my handicap - I'm as likely to oopsie as hit it clean. And I've seen MUCH worse duffers on the course than me - I shudder at the thought of the gouges they'd leave in the putting surface.
