If there's a chance a ball might be lost or OB, hit a provisional ball. You don't have to go back if the first ball is gone, and you'll be within the rules.

Have you ever hit what you thought was a good tee shot and you were unable to find your ball? I have, and after looking for my ball for a few minutes and people waiting to tee off behind me I am not going back and hitting another one.

It's not happening on a busy course on a weekend.
