I'm confident I'm not as knowledgeable as most, but I like a set of rules--any set of rules--that have some underlying touchstone to them. That way, even if you don't know the answer to this exact set of circumstances, you can figure something out. You may get it wrong, but there's some rationale.

With golf, the touchstone is simple: play one ball from where it lies, from start to finish. I have a lot more to learn about the rules, but having an underlying premise helps.
