I have been fortunate not to hit someone's house or put it in the pool, etc. I have witnessed it several times. I have hit into someone's yard many times. If it is easy and accessible without disturbing the residents, I will go retreive it.
In Hot Springs Village, on the Isabella course, there is a house about 220-280 off the tee on the right hand side. The yard is all gravel - low maintenance for the retirees who live there. Evidently this guy got tired of people looking for balls in his yard, so he dumped hundreds of used balls all over his gravel back yard so it would take you a week picking up balls and inspecting them to find yours. That stopped anyone from coming into his yard.

A friend of mine pull-hooked his drive into some condos that sat right up against the golf course. These condos were stucco and had lots of pock marks from previous ball strikes. My friend's ball sounded like an explosion when it hit the side of the condo and an old man came out to complain and told my friend he was going to have to pay for the damage. We told him if he could pick out the specific hole that was ours, we would gladly come over and stucco it ourselves. He gave up and went back inside. His neighbor who witnessed this all from his patio commented that the guy was an A** and he gave everyone a hard time. What makes people like that? Didn't their Mother hug them enough or something? Surely by the time your 80 you would get over it.
