Evidently this guy got tired of people looking for balls in his yard, so he dumped hundreds of used balls all over his gravel back yard so it would take you a week picking up balls and inspecting them to find yours. That stopped anyone from coming into his yard.

Sounds like a serious case of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Would he really rather have an ugly yard strewn with hundreds of random golf balls than permit a few people to walk on his gravel to retrieve individual balls from time to time? Then again, in my experience I've noted that old age can sometimes do funny things to the part of the brain that measures proportionality of response.
