Just manually adjust brightness by holding then sliding the notification bar. Auto isn't really accurate on any phone 100% of the time.

It works almost flawlessly on the iPhone 4 (and 3GS from what I remember).

It also works fine on the SGS2, the problem is that it sets the brightness to low when it changes, not that it doesn't change when it should.
