I don't think I have an issue with beautiful widgets but I will disable them and see if that improves battery life. I actually use setcpu to set profiles for different scenarios. I find that 800mhz is enough for pretty much everything so during the day that's what I have it set to, at night I set it to a max of 500mhz, when plugged in and charging at 1200mhz. Doing that improved my battery life quite significantly.

As for the brightness the automatic adjustments do not work well for me. It's been quite sunny here the past month since got it and almost impossible to see the screen if it's not at full. Can be a bit hard even at the brightest setting to see in direct sunlight depending on what's on screen.
I might get a matte screen protector if I can find one locally that will hopefully make things a bit easier.
