The only raving lunatic here seems to be you... As you've got Xenon lights and have sufficient visability, why did you jump in witht he 40mph bit, huh? I, and the others, were talking about those idiots who drive at a speed where they can't stop in the road they can see - you are not part of that group - well, maybe the idiot bit still fits

I'm in the same "group" as DM in that I'm perfectly happy to drive at the speed limit on unlit motorways because the risk of not seeing something in the road in the dark is not worth worrying about. Plus, the slower you drive under the speed limit the more risk you pose to other road users driving at the speed limit, and almost everyone drives at the speed limit on dark motorways around here.

The only difference in opinions between mine and DM's is that he reckons that he will be able to see and stop for anything in the road while doing 70mph. My opinion is that if it's something small and non reflective, I won't. But is this extra risk going to make me drive slower than the speed limit? No way, and if you think I'm an idiot, I can assure you I'm one of the slower drivers on the motorway in our country, so you might as well say everyone in the UK is an idiot.
