That's still a VERY stupid thing to do, you lose your power steering and would rapidly loose your brake vacuum and if you needed either you wouldn't have time to start the engine. Plus, if it's an automatic, you're looking at damaging that unless it's also got a rear pump, which is unusual.
Ive only done it twice,and the vac pump on mine is electric,seeing as diesels are not capable producing their own vacuum like petrol's

mostly I knock it out of gear and coast for the duration,then blip the throttle then whack it back into gear.

all wrong and frowned apon, but I only do it on a clear stretch with no cars in my lane and I stick to the Lh lane
