Basically he pays the same but isn't tied down to O2 at all. 18-24 month contracts are all well and good if you're provider isn't crap (some are bad in some areas don't know till you have it) or if you want a better deal/phone within that period. Same cost/benefits as full contract but no commitment. I think it's a good deal.

Yup, exactly! Also if you signed up for an 18month contract, it makes it harder to ugprade earlier. With mine, as soon as the new phone is out I can buy it, or wait for someone to sell it second hand like I did. Warranty is transferable so no issues.
