Plus the people I normally drink with have money problems and stopped allowing me to buy them drinks so they don't feel like leaches.

Have you, and your friends, ever worked out how much you spend on alcohol a year? It would probably go a long way towards a holiday or other luxery - let alone take a lot of pressure off their financial circumstances?
