I prefer to say that they put a coat of Michael Bay over the film. It still looks good but its not as perfect as it could be.
The contrast and color temperature is certainly different and I cannot comment on the Final Cut DVD but I can say (as well as reviewers) that the colors, shadow detail/delineation are spot on in the BD version as far as image fidelity.

I mean who are any of us to comment on the intended color correction applied to the transfer?

Not only that, HD content is afforded a broader color space.
