those mermaid bodies are a well known hotchbotch of different body parts etc

You do realize that in that link all the bodies or more or less explained as fakes?
Like the mermaid mummies, many kappa (river imp) mummies are thought to have been crafted by Edo-period artists using parts of animals ranging from monkeys and owls to stingrays. [rolleyes]
