It took me 18 months or so to go from 113kg of fat to 85kg of fairly lean muscle and ive got a decent 6 pack now i guess.
Ive basically never done any form of sport what so ever in my life up untill this point.
This is doing full contact kickboxing btw, i go to my kickboxing gym 3 times a week and train at home 3 times a week.
The gym work is the skill/technical/sparring training and the 3 days i do at home are HIIT/Strength Training/Weighted Core Exercises on seperate days in that order.
This is me now, on the left:

Id just like to point out i didnt train to get a 6pack, i trained to improve at kickboxing and the abs came with it.
As a few people have said before me, all you need is a decent diet, some HIIT to burn bodyfat so you can see your abs and some weighted core exercises so you actually have some abs to show.
With regards to the diet dont try to go on some stupid "Rabbit food" diet as someone said, eat the things you like but everything in moderation.
I personally love meat which is good as i need alot of protein for recovery from my workouts.
Cut out white flour products, change everything to wholegrain and eat as naturally as possible.
Make sure you get a good balance of carbs/protein/fat, dont cut fat out completly but dont add fats when not necessary
