EDIT: another thing I recommend you try to do is find out what other people in your position are getting paid - trust me this knowledge is power.

Hmmm... Not extremely reliable as people (especially those getting paid more) will most likely say they are being paid less than what they really are

. It's happened to me quite a few times.
