EDIT: another thing I recommend you try to do is find out what other people in your position are getting paid - trust me this knowledge is power.
Finding this out can be both a blessing and a curse, so be careful. if you find it out, then during your own negotiations you cannot let it be known that other employees have divulged this information. To do so will usually be a breach of that persons contract, and could lead to that person having disciplinary action taken against them.

Its much better to search online to get a feel for the going salary rate for your position. Print off some adverts etc, and have them with you during your negotiation. If needed you can literally slap them on the table and say "look, I've done my research, and the figure I'm quoting is what I believe I'm worth in todays marketplace, as evidenced by these functions and quoted rates".

Its much harder for a boss to argue with that than someone who says "well I know Mr X is being paid such-and-such an amount".
