Wouldn't go quite that far but you'd be daft to just use it to "buy stuff". I just use mine for online purchases when other payment isn't possible and make sure I pay the bill off each month - or at a mininum, as quickly as possible if I can't quite cover it - like this month!
Remember, they make their money from the people that don't pay their balance off and so have to fork out huge amounts of interest.

As a tool, it'll be very useful but make sure you control it - not the other way round.
