A Sheikh once quoted a biblical verse, something to the effect of;
"satan will make you do 99 good deeds if it can result in him finally getting you to do 1 bad deed"
.
He then gave the example of a Muslim who recites the Qur'an, and thinks that Masha'Allah he has done a good deed (and he has). shaitaan tries to magnify this feeling of "I have done such a good deed by reciting the Qur'an right now", but in a 'slick' manner... not in a manner where one feels they are boasting or showing off, but rather in a 'humble' manner, the way we think we should be (humble). shaitaan then tells this Muslim to pick up this Mushaf very carefully, because it is the word of Allah
. shaitaan then whispers into this Muslim's heart something like
"you know this is the word of Allah, this is no joke, you can't just put it up on your shelf of Islamic books and forget about it, it should be in a nice cover or box or something"
.
The Muslim then asks his kid to bring a nice cover and a small case with lock & key, acting on the shaitaan's whisper, but thinking that he is doing the right thing (he is giving the utmost respect to the word of Allah afterall, right?). He then wraps the Mushaf in the nice cloth cover, then puts it in the nice case, and locks it. Then when he goes to put it on his usual shelf where he keeps his Islamic books where they can be easily reached, shaitaan whispers to him "you know, this is the word of Allah, it needs to be higher up than anything else in this house".
So, again, the Muslim, thinking that he's doing the right thing, asks his kid to bring a small ladder or stepping stool (isn't he doing the right thing? He is showing the utmost respect to the word of Allah afterall, right?).
The kid brings the ladder. The Muslim then goes to the depths of the biggest closet with the highest shelf in his house, one which cannot be reached just by standing but rather requires something to step on, in this case a ladder. He gets on the ladder, puts the now wrapped-and-locked Mushaf up on that shelf.
He then gets down from the ladder, and tells his kid to take away the ladder, walks out of the closet, closes the door, puts the key of the case in which he locked the Mushaf somewhere 'safe', and goes about his day.
Now, whenever he thinks about reading the Qur'an, he is not up to the task of grabbing the ladder or something else to step on, bringing down the Mushaf from way up high where he put it, unlocking it, and then reading it, and securing it back the same way he had it. So, he ends up just
thinking
about reading it, but never actually ends up
doing
it.
Time passes. Days, weeks, months, years.
Once he actually decides to go through the labor of bringing down the Mushaf from that high shelf deep in his closet. So, before doing that, he goes to get the key of the case in which he had locked the Mushaf in, so that he would be able to unlock it, take it out, and recite from it.
He cannot find the key.
So, he again goes about his routine and the Mushaf stays where he had put it a long, long time ago. Wrapped-and-locked, way up high in the depths of his closet.
satan made him follow the etiquette of respecting the Qur'an to such an extreme that he pulled the Muslim away from reciting the Qur'an.
satan made him do some good deeds, the end result of which turned out to be a great, great loss for the Muslim - he stopped reciting from that very Mushaf, that very word of Allah, which he was giving so much respect to.
Insha'Allah this makes all of us think.
May Allah
protect us all, and may he forgive me for anything I said wrong. Ameen.
