The britisher put the likes of Abdu and afghani in position of authority, giving rise to lamadhabism.
As for shaikh Abdal Wahab was correct in his venture in ridding hijaz of biddah but in doing so his movement also damaged the established sciences of islam and opted for a minority view which was never accepted by the vast majority. The wahabism in general is a simplton movement and verges on dissinjenious scholarship. They safeguard this by not allowing scholars from other recognised institute. The hounding out of scholars is a prime example.
