Music is haram, no questions about that.

Proofs

1) Surah Luqman, verse 6: "And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e.music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allâh without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allâh, or the Verses of the Qur'ân) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire)."

Abdullah ibn Masoud when asked about the word lahw [in Arabic] in this verse, he replied: I swear by the One who their is no deity besides it means singing. He repeated it thrice.


Surah Al-Isra', verse 64: "And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allâh's disobedience), make assaults on them with your cavalry and your infantry, share with them wealth and children (by tempting them to earn money by illegal ways - usury or by committing illegal sexual intercourse), and make promises to them." But Satan promises them nothing but deceit"

The voice here means music, singing, etc.


2) Hadith. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will come a time when people of my nation will make halal: fornication, wearing of silk, wine and instruments." Classified as Sahih, Ibn Mahjah.

3) Salaf.
Ahmad ibn Hanbal used to say: Music cultivates hypocrisy in the heart akin to how water grows a plant.
Imam Malik said: It is the fasiq who does this act.
Abu Bakr Al Sideeq: Singing and music are the instruments of the Devil.
Followers of Abu Haneefa: Listening to music is fisq and enjoying it is kufr.
Al-Qurtubi: Music is unlawful by the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of his Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Al-Fadil ibn Ayad: Music is an entryway to fornication.
Yazid ibn Walid: Music decreases haya [shyness], increases lust and destroys magnanimity.

Hence one can see the clear evidence of it's unlawfulness. You will never find someone close to Allah and yet listens to music; because music itself prevents one from the remembrance of Allah.
