So recently I started a new job and, for the first time I'm actually going out LOOKIng like a muslim (beard, kufi). Naturally, people recognize me as one. This one guy likes to ask me questions and stuff (which is sort of the point of looking like one!). He served in Iraq so he's been around muslims before (as he said when he first asked "You're white... but I know what that hat means.") However, he seems to have seen some crazy stuff so he has some funny ideas.

For example, he was under the impression that in Islam, if you make a mistake, if you sin, that's IT. You are DONE for and that there is no forgiveness. I told him I had never heard of anything like that at all. He of course thinks honor killings are part of the religion, because he knew of some Jordanian man who killed his daughter.

There was something else he mentioned that I am forgetting, but my question is, for the "no forgiveness in Islam" thing is... has anyone heard this? My concern is not "is this true islam?" Cause I know it's not, so you don't need to quote hadith or ayat about it. My question is if anyone knows the origins of these deviant beliefs. Any Iraqis? Is this a particular cultural thing?

If I remember the other questions or funny ideas he'd heard I'll post them here too.

Yeah, I have a friend who thought the same thing--ie that if you do something un-Islamic you're simply not a Muslim anymore. It has to do with the way in which Islam is presented to Western audiences. People get the impression that if a Muslim smokes weed or kisses a woman, they're simply killed under the sharia. They seem to think that no Muslims ever commit any sins, or if they do commit sins (ie lying), they're not really sins cause it's alright to do those things to non-Muslims. There seriously are people that think it's a Muslims duty to simply murder all non-Muslims. They think that Christians and Jews living in Islamic lands were wiped out centuries ago. This just gives you an idea of the ignorance that exists about Islam in many parts of the country. But what can you expect? Most people barely know their own history, let alone the history of cultures halfway across the world. Even in regards to their own religion, they can be just as ignorant. I think I saw a survey that said half of all Roman Catholics don't know that when they eat the bread and drink the wine during communion, according to Roman Catholic theology they literally are eating the blood and flesh of Isa .

Also, him having been in Iraq has nothing to do with it. Most of the soldiers that serve there have no understanding whatsoever of the people whose country they're occupying. They don't speak their language, they don't interact with them in any meaningful way (most only leave their bases to do patrols), and most of everything they've most likely heard about Islam has come from some Robert Spencer-like polemicist who get paid by my tax dollars to spew his vitriol about Islam.
