Salam Aleykum,

I remember reading a detailed study on this, firstly they clarify that the majority opinion was that they do hear, hen they state the different opinions:

1- they hear always.
2- they hear for a limited time(I think the time before the judgement of the grave).
3- they do not hear.

All three provide some decent proofs but the main thing they all agree on is that when you go to address the dead it would not benefit them nor would they benefit you so it's useless.
