I'm a research scientist (pharmacology/molecular pharmacology) and have worked in both academia and industry (large pharma and small pharma). I don't know what Rottenpunk's degree(s) are in, but if you are going to follow the path of higher learning you have to be realistic about what you want and things. Many higher degrees are pretty much useless in terms of getting a decent paying job. Make sure to investigate not only whether you like doing a particular thing, but also that there are jobs and advancement opportunities in the field you want to pursue.
As much a pain as school is, there will definitely be times when you wish you were still there after getting out in the workforce..lol
