As for your question, it really depends on the specific game and how it's designed to utilize CPU resources. Some newer games are starting to take advantage of multi-core processors, but it still needs to be a widespread feature. Generally, you'll benefit more from investing in a newer single-core CPU with a higher clock speed, especially for gaming. But there's no shame in trying to get the most out of older hardware!
