As a slight defence - some people's kendo is just a good or a bad fit for you. There's certain people who don't give me trouble but give others lots, and vice versa. It's my job to work it out, no excuses, but it is what it is. Also, beginner's timing is really funky and they don't respond to the normal cues that seniors do, sometimes leading to unexpected results, so perhaps that's what your 6 dan dude was trying to say.
During a seminar a while back, I regularly scored kote on a godan, senior member of a national team. I admit I was puzzled, and during 2nd practice asked him what was happening. I wanted to figure out if he was just letting me practice kote or if he was trying to teach me something else.

He explained that he was having a lot of trouble with my kote and that I was actually scoring. He continued to explain that he saw the begining of my attack, countered and moved in to score. My kote was so slow he was countering air with my kote landing as he was launching for his attack . He described it as a "dead leaf falling from a tree" technique.

Needless to say, once he figured it out (2nd keiko) the universe returned to normal.

I have been trying to correct that left hand ever since Once I figure it out, I will learn how to do the "dead leaf" technique on purpose
Sometimes scoring or giving a more advanced players a challenge underlines our weakness.
