The Canon PowerShot SD (Digital IXUS in your part of the world) line are the most popular and generally well-reviewed point and shoot cameras as Neil and Michael have pointed out. You can't go wrong with even the least expensive Digital IXUS model. Canon makes great DSLRs and lenses too.
