If I remember right we can use 'minimum force to restrain' here in the UK, not too sure how difficult it is to prove what 'minimum' is...

"Well I had him in an arm lock and smashed his face into a wall but he still kept trying to run away, so I broke his leg. He then tried to hop away so I broke his other one."
