Two thoughts.

Terry Pratchet got his gong for his work with Alzheimers not for writing books (according to the press release)

(did you also know that the word 'embuggerance' was first coined by Pratchett?)

And I thought I'd share with you what I have been told by a friend after he collected his MBE from Liz herself. One palace staff member told him that many years ago some wag amongst their number 're-designated' what the three main gong acronym's stood for. This is why people REALLY get an award;

MBE = My bloody efforts (earned this)
OBE = Others bloody efforts (earned this)
CBE = Conned bloody Elizabeth (into giving me this)
