I recommend you check with the airline as to the max dimensions for a tube that won't get you into overcharges, then go to a carpet store and ask for an old center tube of a carpet roll. Usually they are happy to get rid of them, will give to you.
Cut to proper length, stuff with your toys, stick some padding / clothes whatever, tape the ends with shipping tape, there you are.
I have one I've used for years with everything from jo to live swords, it's been great and cost about 20 cents for the tape.
I did tape a block of styrofoam on the side to keep it from rolling - I had a vision of it rolling in front of a moving 747. But now it looks just like a shoulder fired antiaircraft missile
and I have gotten some odd looks walking through airports with it.
